Waldorf Astoria The Palm- Dubai

When venturing out to Dubai, you can expect a big breath of humidity in your face with the air being hotter than an Arabs armpit and expect sweat appearing on your upper lip (SULA). So I would firstly advise a fan, lots of suncream and a pashmina.

For my birthday, I planned a trip to Dubai as I love it there so couldn’t wait to get back to some sun, sambucas and sassy Arabs. So we’ve jumped off the plane and walked through arrivals and waiting there is a well dressed driver to escort us to the car – brilliant. Perfectly timed. After a swift drive to the hotel, we were greeted by the straightest teethed bellboys as we got escorted up to the club lounge for a private check in. The hotel is nothing short of a palace. Everything is immaculate… the stairs, the lifts, the check-in, the staff; the service is amazing. As we had our breakfast in the lounge, we look outside onto the rest of the palm which was a sight for sore eyes.

Waldorf Astoria the Palm is a 3-year-old luxury beach hotel offering beautiful skyline view rooms all located on the iconic Palm of Dubai. Well slap me thrice and hand me to my mother I hear you say, yes we were in for a treat. So when looking for a luxury hotel, I think it’s good to break it down into the following sections:

  1. Facilities – 5/5

From the entrance to the reception, the interiors were bloody fabulous, featuring crisp marble surroundings with trendy décor. The concierge took our bags off us…(I know… casual) as we entered, and ice cold water bottles were delivered on the sun loungers as we tanned like a crisp. The bedroom was fit for a queen, with a marble bathroom including a bath with a television, wet room and our lovely view of the skyline. The hotel was so big, it felt as if it wasn’t busy which was nice as it felt a lot more private. With so many things to do such as paddle boarding, afternoon tea, relaxing in the spa; I could have stayed in the hotel and had plenty to do.

The hotel also provides an afternoon tea experience, where you smelt different ‘erbs and whichever one tickled your fancy, you have it in your tea. Alongside this, we enjoyed a Parisian and English styled brunch with goats cheese, scones, pate and loads of French crap that tasted tres, tres amazing.

  1. Dining – 4/5

The hotel food was holy god damn, great, which showcased Lao, a Vietnamese restaurant, Social, a 3 Michelin star Italian and Mezzerie, an All Day Dining Restaurant.

Lao was a real delight to dine at, the food was presented like in MasterChef and tasted amazing. The service was very good, with our wine glasses being topped up regularly. They also have a very extensive menu with traditional Vietnamese cuisine which was good as quite often menu’s can be limited.

Social was well…. Nothing short of excellent. The service was impeccable, with the staff looking like a trio of James Bond lookalikes with an Italian accent, I know, dreamy. The presentation of the food was fit for a king, and it truly was a fine dining experience however, not the kind where you literally get a crumb of meat and a leaf on top… Thankgod. Each dish was packed full of flavours from traditional Italian recipes with a lot of food on the plate – always a good thing!

This hotel also prides itself on educating their staff on the implications of food waste, and exactly what foods can be recycled to be eco-friendlier. Although this may not be important when selecting a holiday destination, it does make the hotel stand out from the rest.

Overall the dining was delightful however the only criticism I had was for Mezzerie, the drinks were included for Breakfast such as water, juices and coffees however, in the evening we got charged for all of the above which was just inconsistent and a bit annoying.

Accommodation 5/5

Well, the room was immaculate, the softest robes and slippers making it very difficult to leave at all. There was a shower, wetroom and a bath with a TV obviously variety is key in these situations. It was spectacular, the whole décor screamed luxury. The marble interior was stunning, and looked, crisp. Already in the room was a variety of amenities, with a dental kit, Salvatore Ferragamo shampoo, conditioner, soap and moisturizer – may have taken some of those bad boys for the road…. The hotel delivered fresh towels every day with new bath robes (which is like being wrapped in a silk). I also got delivered a birthday cake I think everyday and a personalised note to wish me a Happy Birthday which was lovely.

The room was fully equipped, with a coffee machine, snacks, a fridge filled full of chilled beverages and even a sewing kit just in-case you popped a button! With an iPhone dock on the side of the bed, it was a perfect combination of tranquillity by day, pre drinks by night.

Service 3/5

The overall service of the hotel was spectacular, we definitely couldn’t have asked for me as the housekeeping staff were so polite, and the food and beverage staff were very attentive. The front office staff were very pleasant and professional being available 24/7 via telephone from the room as well as room service. However, we had some problems with the bill at the end of the stay as we had been overcharged. It was all a bit disorganised as I went to check the day before and I informed them of the changes that needed to be made. However, there seemed to be a lack of communication between the teams. We then left the hotel for the airport to come home and I received a phone call that they had made another mistake on the bill and undercharged us. I just thought this was unprofessional and a bit disappointing as we had already rectified the bill numerous times. However, this didn’t detract from the amazing hotel and its beautiful facilities. I would definitely return there if I was booking a holiday to Dubai.
